From three logical requirements it is proven that the "probability of existence" must always take the mathematical form P = e⁻ˢ. Everything stable exists — but not with equal weight: e⁻ˢ gives the paths of least resistance (action, complexity, stability) the preference. No prohibition on the rest, but a preference — and that preference follows from the law itself, not from outside.
This entire page also exists as a plain-language reading version, with a link back to the formal original per section. To Mathematics in Words →
For the lay reader: this page builds the mathematical core of EEML from three minimal requirements, without taking anything from physics as given. The familiar Boltzmann factor e−S follows as a theorem, not a postulate.
For the academic: the derivation is pre-physical in that it presupposes no thermodynamic or quantum-mechanical framework. Conventions: S is a real-valued functional on a configuration space 𝒞; variables are dimensionless in natural units (ℏ=c=1). Status per claim: derived, motivated, open.
In plain language, the formulas below say exactly this:

Intuitive: a "configuration" is a complete description of what a possible universe looks like — with its geometry, fields, and all parameters. The collection of all possible configurations is the playing field on which selection happens.
Let 𝒞 be a topological space whose points correspond to complete specifications of a physical system. Each point C ∈ 𝒞 is called a configuration. A Borel σ-algebra ℬ(𝒞) is defined on 𝒞, and a reference point C0 ∈ 𝒞 can be chosen without loss of generality.
A selection functional is a function P: ℬ(𝒞) → [0, 1] that assigns a selection probability to each measurable set of configurations. The central problem of EEML: what functional form does P take, given minimal structural requirements?
For the lay reader: three requirements for how "probability of existence" should behave. They are so basic that they are difficult to reject, but they are assumptions — not true by themselves.
For independent configurations A, B (i.e. A ⊥ B in 𝒞):
P(A ⊕ B) = P(A) · P(B)
Independence: there is no information about A that says anything about B. Composition ⊕: combination as disjoint configuration.
P: (𝒞, τ) → ([0,1], standard topology) is continuous. Equivalently: for every convergent sequence Cn → C, P(Cn) → P(C).
There exists a real-valued functional S: 𝒞 → ℝ ∪ {+∞}, the resistance-action, such that for independent A, B:
S(A ⊕ B) = S(A) + S(B)
Under axioms A2, A3, A4, there exists a unique continuous function φ: ℝ → [0, 1] such that P(C) = φ(S(C)), and this necessarily has the form:
φ(s) = e−s (up to scale normalisation)
Machine-verified (13 August 2026): the core theorem has been formalised and accepted in Lean 4 against mathlib, including the point that monotonicity need not be assumed but follows from the codomain (P(s+t) ≤ P(s) because P(t) ≤ 1). The proof rests on exactly Lean's standard axioms (propext, choice, quotients): the same trio as in the price list. Script archived (Kern.lean).
From A2 + A4: φ(S(A)+S(B)) = φ(S(A))·φ(S(B)). This is the Cauchy multiplicative functional equation:
f(x + y) = f(x) · f(y) for all x, y ∈ ℝ
Under A3 (continuity), the unique family of solutions is f(x) = ecx for a constant c ∈ ℝ (Aczél 1966, §2.1.2; theorem traces to Cauchy 1821). The convention P ≤ 1 with P maximal at S minimal forces c = −1, up to a trivial normalisation φ(0) = 1. ∎
Theorem 3.1 re-confirms — in a pre-physical framework — the structure appearing in: Boltzmann's statistical mechanics (S = E/kBT), Feynman's path integrals (S = classical action), and Jaynes' maximum entropy formalism (Shore & Johnson 1980). The exponential form is structurally necessary, not conventional.
Since x ↦ e−x is strictly monotonically decreasing: arg maxC ∈ 𝒞 P(C) = arg minC ∈ 𝒞 S(C). The configuration of least resistance carries the highest preference. Infinitesimal form:
δS = 0
This is the principle of least action — not assumed but derived from the three axioms. Note the reading key: "highest preference" is not "only possible". Configurations of greater resistance retain weight (exponentially less), they exist; δS = 0 marks the preference, not a prohibition on the rest. The distribution over all configurations returns in Addendum 10.3.
The main theorem does not need the continuity assumption. Since P lies in [0,1] by definition (Definition 1.2), h = ln φ is an additive function bounded above everywhere, and an additive function bounded above on a set of positive measure is linear (Ostrowski 1929; the pathological Hamel solutions are unbounded on every such set). With S ≥ 0 and non-triviality, P = e⁻ˢ follows directly from A2 + A4 + the codomain. The system thereby compresses from three axioms to two, and continuity degrades from assumption to consequence: f(EE) = EE in practice, the law itself became simpler. Caveat: the range of S must contain an interval; for purely discrete range, e⁻ˢ is the canonical but not unique interpolation. Full proof: working document kernwerk-12aug.
Intuitive: the "total action" S decomposes into three independent contributions: how natural the dynamics is (Sdyn), how simply the configuration is described (K), and how stable it is under perturbation (I). None reduces to the others.
For a sufficiently smooth configuration C ∈ 𝒞 there exists a decomposition
Seff(C) = Sdyn(C) + Kdesc(C) + Istruct(C)
corresponding to a splitting of the tangent space TC𝒞 into three orthogonal subspaces:
under the L²-inner-product structure on TC𝒞.
What there was to prove. The decomposition lemma counts three kinds of directions (flow, gauge, transverse), and the honesty question was always: does nothing count twice? That is now a theorem in three parts, each formalised and accepted in Lean 4 (Orthogonaliteit.lean, zero errors). One: if S is constant along a gauge orbit, then dS annihilates the orbit direction: ∇S ⊥ Tr, everywhere, so the gradient flow is orthogonal to the gauge directions: A and K count disjointly. Two: the orbit of a critical point under an S-invariant transformation is entirely critical. Three: on such a critical orbit the Hessian annihilates the orbit direction: Hess S = 0 on Tr, so K and I count disjointly.
What follows, and what stays open. With Tt ⊥ Tr (part one) and Th := (Tr ⊕ Tt)⊥ by construction, the splitting T = Tr ⊕ Tt ⊕ Th is pairwise L²-orthogonal, and the Hessian is block-diagonal over the splitting at critical points (a symmetric form vanishing on a subspace has no cross terms with it). Conditions, honestly named: S invariant and differentiable, the gauge action linear (isometric for the inner-product reading). And what stays open: the identification of the three blocks with Sdyn, K and I remains [motivated]: what is proven is the geometric heart (no double counting), not the naming of the terms. The four proofs rest on the standard trio (propext, choice, quotients).
αK = ln 2 per bit. The K term weighs as e−αKK. Levin's coding theorem says the universal semimeasure coincides with 2−K and is maximal: it dominates every other semi-computable measure. Any other base (e.g. 4−K) decays faster, is dominated, hence non-maximal. Maximality is precisely the effortlessness requirement: no extra information smuggled in on top of the description itself. So e−αKK = 2−K, i.e. αK = ln 2 when K counts bits (and 1 in nats): a choice of unit, not a dial.
αI = ½. Members are not points but neighbourhoods: a configuration's weight is the integral over its fluctuation basin. In the quadratic (Laplace) approximation the Gaussian integral gives λ−1/2 per mode, together det(Hess S)−1/2 = e−½ ln det Hess. With the existing definition I = ln det Hess it follows that αI = ½ exactly: the half is the Gaussian integral, nothing else.
Consequence and conditions. S = A + (ln 2)·K + ½·I thus has zero free weight parameters: the status page's "only signs fixed" is upgraded to "values forced". Conditions, honestly named: K in bits with the maximality requirement (Levin), validity of the quadratic approximation, and zero modes migrating to the gauge sector rather than into I. [derived, conditional]
(i) Tt ⊥ Th: time evolution is tangent to a solution trajectory; Hessian variation is normal to the extremal surface.
(ii) Tt ⊥ Tr: physical evolution is invariant under reparametrisation (covariance / diff-invariance).
(iii) Th ⊥ Tr: Hessian eigenvalues are gauge-invariant.
Status: physically compelling and routinely used in BRST formalisms, but a uniform mathematical proof requires an explicit metric on 𝒞 (candidate: DeWitt metric). Strict proof is an open research goal. ∎
Formulate orthogonality (i)–(iii) rigorously in the DeWitt metric on superspace, or provide a counterexample outside the perturbative regime.
Formal: on a (pseudo-)Riemannian manifold (M, g) with matter fields φ:
Sdyn[g, φ] = ∫M [R / (16πG) + ½ gμν∂μφ ∂νφ − V(φ)] √|g| d4x
Einstein-Hilbert plus matter. On Ricci-flat K3 (Rμν=0) this reduces to the matter contribution.
Status update (August 2026): across finite internal geometries Sdyn is selection-flat. The naive reading in which the bare vacuum term counts would charge ~(Λ/H0)⁴ per extra fermion state and is refuted by the existence of our own (particle-rich) address; under the renormalised reading (vacuum term per member set to the measured cosmological constant) self-consistent candidates do not differ at vacuum level. Consequence: in the selection over finite spectral triples (§12) the descriptive term K carries all the discriminating work; there is no hidden route through the dynamics. See testing page, address ledger.
Under local, covariant, diffeomorphism-invariant action with ≤ 2nd-order derivatives in g, Einstein-Hilbert is unique up to boundary terms (Lovelock 1971).
The Euclidean Einstein-Hilbert action is not bounded from below on unrestricted metrics: under a conformal transformation g → Ω²g the conformal factor acquires a wrong-sign kinetic term, so rapidly varying Ω makes the action arbitrarily negative (Gibbons–Hawking–Perry 1978). Consequence: the existence of a minimiser of Seff — needed to make "the selected configuration" in Corollary 3.2 well-defined — is not guaranteed on bare superspace; the coercivity assumption of the direct method demonstrably fails there.
Two repairs:
Status: the failure of boundedness is rigorous; the repairs are conditional (rotation) resp. hard-within-sector (restriction). EEML's physical claims run through the K3 sector, i.e. the second route.
Intuitive: how many bits does it take to fully specify a configuration? A simple configuration has low K.
K(C) = Ktopo(M) + Kmoduli(M) + Kfields(φ | M)
Ktopo(M) = log2|ℌn|, homeomorphism classes under imposed structural conditions.
Kmoduli(M) = dimℝ(𝓜Einstein(M)) · log2(ΛUV/ΛIR).
Kfields(φ|M) = Σi log2(1/εi) for N independent field parameters.
Ktopo(K3) = 0 ← K3 unique in class Kmoduli(K3) = 58 · log2(1015) ≈ 2890 bits ← dim 𝓜Einstein = 57 + volume Kfields(SM) ≈ 950 bits Ktotal ≈ 3840 bits
Comparison: CY3 with dim 𝓜 ~ 200 + 50% SUSY breaking gives K ≈ 12860 bits. ΔK ≈ 9020 bits → weight ratio 2−ΔK = e−6252.
Correction (July 2026): earlier versions counted Kmoduli = 20·log₂(10¹⁵) ≈ 997 bits here (only h1,1 = 20), contradicting the framework's own definition (dim 𝓜Einstein) and the K3 reference card on the physics page (dim = 57+1). The ratio also stood as e−ΔK/ln 2; correct is 2−ΔK = e−ΔK·ln 2. Both repaired; the qualitative selection (K3 ≪ CY3) is unchanged.
Measured (July 2026): the spectral description cost has now been measured for the first time instead of estimated, from the computed Laplacian spectrum (physics page 6.1): a generic surface has no spectral degeneracies (~7000 bits for the first ~440 modes), the Fermat K3 compresses through its symmetry multiplets to ~400 to 1400 bits (factor 5 to 17), and T⁴ to a formula of ~10 bits. Note the ordering: T⁴ is more compressible than K3 and is still hard-eliminated (π₁ ≠ 0) — compressibility is not the first gate; hard elimination precedes soft weighing.
The MDL choice is not unique. Under alternatives (Shannon entropy, Kolmogorov complexity, dimension counting) the qualitative ordering (K3 ≪ CY3, T⁴ ≤ K3) remains robust. Quantitative values of αK are choice-dependent.
Intuitive: how stable is the configuration under perturbation? Instability (tachyons) or fine-tuning is penalised.
Let V: 𝒞 → ℝ be the potential and HC := D²V|C the Hessian with eigenvalues {λi}. Define:
I(C) = Itach(C) + Ift(C) Itach(C) = Σi: λᵢ < 0 τᵢ · |λᵢ| Ift(C) = Σi: 0 < |λᵢ| < Λ²nat log(Λ²nat / |λᵢ|)
(i) Tachyons give I(C) > 0, diverging with multiple tachyons.
(ii) Near-critical eigenvalues incur logarithmic fine-tuning penalty.
T⁴ vs K3: π1(T⁴) ≠ 0 yields Goldstone-like modes at 1/R; these produce I(T⁴) ≫ I(K3) independent of αI > 0.
Two different Hessians are in play, and they must not be conflated:
Since Istruct is a function of spec(Hphys), Seff contains second derivatives of V — so structurally Hsel ≠ Hphys. Implications in either direction ("physically stable ⟹ selection attractor" or conversely) are not given: they hold only if V and Seff share the same critical structure. This is an independent open problem (11.5). Stability statements on this page about λi always concern Hphys unless stated otherwise.
E[C] = αS · Sdyn(C) + αK · Kdesc(C) + αI · Istruct(C) Convention: αS = 1. Naturalness: αK, αI > 0.
For qualitative orderings between topological classes or discrete parameters, the minimiser of E is independent of the exact values of αK, αI as long as αK, αI > 0 and competitive terms point in the same direction.
Let C1, C2 be two configurations. Denote ΔE = αSΔS + αKΔK + αIΔI. If sgn(ΔS) = sgn(ΔK) = sgn(ΔI), then sgn(ΔE) is independent of positive magnitudes of αK, αI. Selection depends only on signs of differences. ∎
For quantitative predictions (numerical α, mass ratios, exact frequencies), αK and αI are needed. These are not determined by EEML itself. See §11.
The observer-conditioned measure factorises per member into structure F (weight 2⁻ᴷ) and address coordinates (conditional density). For observed data the total surprise decomposes additively: −log₂ P = K(F) + typicality bits. Model comparison at fixed data must therefore use the sum: K is the prior, typicality the likelihood, and the "combined ledger" of the testing page is nothing but Bayesian model comparison with the universal prior. Bare K-minimisation is the special case of equal likelihoods. The methodological rule of 12 August (and the axion reasoning built on it) is thereby a theorem rather than a convention.
Each building block of E is itself a minimal choice within its own category:
f(EE) = EE is not merely philosophical but operational.
For the lay reader: when multiple paths from start to end are possible, all contribute — but paths with higher action contribute exponentially less. That is precisely P = e−S.
K(Cinit, Cfinal) = ∫𝒫 𝒟x e−Seff[x]/ℏ (Euclidean)
𝒫 = paths from Cinit to Cfinal; 𝒟x is the formal measure (rigorous via Osterwalder-Schrader). Classical limit ℏ → 0: dominated by stationary path, yielding δS = 0.
Negative part (rigorous): deterministic gradient descent xt+1 = xt − η∇Seff(xt) does not implement arg min Seff. Under the Łojasiewicz property every bounded trajectory converges to a single critical point (Łojasiewicz 1963; Absil–Mahony–Andrews 2005), but the limit is the local minimum of the basin of the initial point; with ≥ 2 isolated local minima, non-global basins have positive measure. "Realisation" is therefore defined as the mode of P (Corollary 3.2), reached via the measure above — not as the limit of a flow from an arbitrary initial point.
Positive part (Laplace): for finite-dimensional 𝒞, Seff ∈ C² coercive with finitely many non-degenerate global minima C1*, …, Cm*, the measure Pℏ = e−Seff/ℏ/Z converges weakly (ℏ → 0) to Σk wk δCk* with
wk ∝ det(D²Seff|Ck*)−1/2
The limit measure is therefore not uniform over global minima: flatter minima (smaller determinant) weigh more; uniform only under equal determinants (symmetry). In field theory det becomes the ζ-regularised functional determinant — exactly the one-loop prefactor, tying this result directly to the heat-kernel programme of 11.4.
Dynamical realisation: the dynamics that does reach arg min is noise + annealing (Langevin diffusion with stationary measure ∝ e−Seff/ε and cooling schedule εt ~ c/log t; Geman–Hwang 1986). Rigorous in ℝⁿ; the field-theoretic version (stochastic quantisation, Parisi–Wu) is the candidate framework for open problem 11.2.
Intuitive: "what exists", "with what weight" and "what is actual" are three different questions. All stable configurations exist; the measure distributes the weights; and "which one is actual?" turns out to be answerable only from the inside. This replaces the unprovable requirement that only one universe could be possible — the necessity lies not in the one universe but in the distribution.
𝔄 := { C ∈ 𝒞 : Seff(C) < ∞, ∇Seff(C) = 0, D²Seff|C ⪰ 0 } existence — many μ(Ck) ∝ e−Seff(Ck)/ℏ · det′(D²Seff|Ck)−1/2 measure — weights (Theorem 10.2) x* ∈ 𝔄 actuality — indexical
The chain H ⊇ X ⊇ 𝔄 ∋ x* is precisely the "Three Modes of Existence" of the philosophy page: 𝔄 is mode A (stable subset), now with an exact definition. No convexity of Seff is required; 𝔄 may be large or infinite.
Let 𝒪 be the algebra of physical observables on 𝒞 (functionals determined by the structure of Seff). Call actuality causally efficacious if there exists an O ∈ 𝒪 whose value depends on C's being actual over and above C's membership of 𝔄. Then exactly one of the following holds:
Proof: excluded middle on "∃O ∈ 𝒪 distinguishing actuality"; the costs follow per branch. ∎
The HERE ontology states: no outside, no external condition; f(EE) = EE refers to nothing beyond itself. An activation field a is exactly such a reference: it distinguishes universes on grounds not following from Seff, and its own selection requires an instance outside the self-consistent law — the infinite regress the philosophy page treats as disqualifying. Under the HERE axioms branch (a) falls away, hence:
actuality is indexical; the objective, necessary structure is the pair (𝔄, μ)
The measure is computable: det′ is the ζ-regularised one-loop determinant (heat-kernel programme, 11.4). What weakens: "the only possible universe" becomes "the necessary distribution over existing universes". What remains unchanged: "freedom = determinism" (that claim concerns the structure of the law, not the number of minima). The reading "x* = arg max μ" also remains available as a weakened uniqueness claim — well-defined only for a unique maximum; under symmetry degeneracy one gets spontaneous symmetry breaking rather than "one".
A third reading — x* = the basin the flow actually fell into — is consistent as mathematics but makes actuality contingent on an initial condition: exactly the external condition that intrinsic determinism excludes. Not an option within EEML.
Replaces: the implicit assumption that arg min Seff is unique (a convexity-like requirement, unproven and for compactification landscapes probably false). The open uniqueness problem is thereby not solved but decomposed: the part that had to be true (necessity) now lives in μ; the part that could not be proven (uniqueness) turns out not to be needed.
Remains open (11.6): normalisability of μ over all of 𝔄; volume factors under continuous degeneracy (moduli spaces); the status of boundary configurations (λmin = 0) in 𝔄 — linked to 11.5.
Intuitive: the stability term turns out not to be independent. Tachyons are not a penalty but a disqualification (what decays does not exist — does not belong to 𝔄), and fine-tuning is description cost: tuning a parameter to precision ε costs log(1/ε) bits — which K already measures (Def. 6.1, Kfields). This eliminates αI, and αK is fixed at ln 2: one extra bit of description = a factor 2 less preference.
E[C] = Sdyn(C) + ln 2 · Kdesc(C) on 𝔄 := {Seff < ∞, δSdyn = 0, D²V ⪰ 0}
(a) Itach → membership. A penalty on configurations that cannot sustain themselves is a category error; exclusion from 𝔄 (D²V ⪰ 0) is the correct form. The τᵢ·|λᵢ| heuristic with decay times is retired.
(b) Ift → bits. Ift = Σ log(Λ²/|λ|) is exactly the description cost of near-critical parameters: Ift = ln 2 · Σ log₂(Λ²/|λ|), a part of K. The old form double-counted.
(c) αK = ln 2. Prefix-free description lengths add under composition (so K qualifies under axiom A4), and the probability semantics of a bit is a factor 2 — the universal-prior structure (Solomonoff 1964; Li & Vitányi 2008). Any other αK is not a physical freedom but a redefinition of the log base.
(d) Correction to the crossover in 11.3. As bit cost, the tuning penalty is not amplified by 1/ℏ: the weight of a flat mode ∝ (λ/Λ²)¹ · λ−1/2 = λ+1/2 → 0. The fine-tuning penalty wins robustly, at every ℏ; the earlier αI* = ℏ/2 tension was an artefact of the double-counting.
(e) Consequence for 11.5. The two Hessians get disjoint jobs: D²V decides existence (membership of 𝔄), D²Seff decides weights (the det′ prefactor in μ). Nothing needs to coincide, because selection runs through the measure, not through a flow. The compatibility question is downgraded from blocking to a question about the optional dynamical picture.
Open remainder: the factorisation e−Sdyn/ℏ · 2−K (quantum-weighted dynamics × prior-weighted description) is a structural assumption; and the MDL choice itself remains motivated (Def. 6.1).
Intuitive: may one sum over all existing universes, or does the sum explode? Answer: the complexity term itself enforces convergence. Simplicity is exponentially preferred, and that is exactly enough to render an infinite landscape harmless.
ΣC ∈ 𝔄disc e−Sdyn/ℏ · 2−K(C) · det′−1/2 ≤ D · e−B/ℏ · Σ 2−K ≤ D · e−B/ℏ < ∞
Prefix-free codes satisfy the Kraft inequality Σ 2−K ≤ 1 (Kraft 1949; McMillan 1956; Cover & Thomas 2006, Th. 5.2.1). With Sdyn ≥ B > −∞ on the sector (Caveat 5.1-R2, K3) and det′−1/2 ≤ D the chain follows. There are at most 2K configurations per description length K — the landscape may be infinite as long as complexity grows without bound, and it does. ∎
Conditions made explicit: prefix-free MDL language [motivated], sector lower bound on Sdyn [hard within the K3 sector], bounded prefactor [linked to the boundary λ→0].
Continuous part: moduli integrals ∫𝓜 dvolWP are finite for broad classes of Calabi-Yau moduli spaces (Douglas & Lu 2005) — conditional for the K3 sector.
Philosophical reading: "the distribution is necessary" (Addendum 10.3) is tenable precisely because the complicated weighs nothing. The sum over everything that exists converges thanks to the preference for simplicity — the reading key at the top literally carries the proof here.
Intuitive: what does the distribution μ mean for us? "Actual" is indexical (Corollary 10.5), and the question "which universe is actual?" can only be asked in a universe that sufficiently represents itself. Predictions therefore follow from μ conditioned on self-representing universes, plus typicality within them.
Definition (self-representation). C ∈ 𝔄 is self-representing if C contains a subsystem σ that encodes the law of C (form of Seff + parameters to physically relevant precision): K(law(C) | σ) = O(1). Not a complete micro-model — the Gödel limit forbids that — but a sufficient self-model.
Reading rule (assumption, now explicit). Predictions = expectations under μ( · | 𝔄self), with typicality within 𝔄self := {C : C self-representing}.
Theorem (half): self-representation ⟹ compressibility. A self-model must fit inside C: K(law(C)) ≤ capacity of σ < capacity of C. A universe whose law requires more bits than any subsystem can hold cannot represent itself. Hence 𝔄self ⊆ {low K}. ∎ [hard as an AIT inequality]
Conjecture (convergence). μ concentrates on low K (Reduction 10.6), and self-representation requires low K (the half theorem). Conjecture: conditioning on 𝔄self barely changes μ — the self-understanding universes are exactly the μ-heavy ones. Then the reading rule is almost free. Missing direction: low K ⟹ generically self-representable (requires that simple laws admit universal computation). [open — this is the sharp form of "the actual universe understands itself": not a definition of actuality, but a convergence theorem in the making]
The referee question: how does the asymmetric, complex physical reality emanate from a mathematically perfectly optimised law? The three-layer gives a clean answer to both halves.
Let G be a symmetry group acting on 𝒞 leaving Seff invariant. If the preferred configurations form a G-orbit (degeneracy), then the measure μ is exactly G-symmetric: Seff and det′ are G-invariant, so all members of the orbit receive equal weight. But each member individually breaks G. And since actuality is indexical (Corollary 10.5), we inhabit one broken member — we see asymmetry, while the law remains symmetric. The observed asymmetry is thus not an inconsistency of the optimisation but a consequence of the three-layer: symmetry concerns the distribution, breaking the member. This is spontaneous symmetry breaking, exactly in the "both-and with an address" format of the philosophy page — and it is precisely the case where "the winner" is an orbit rather than a point (see Addendum 10.3: symmetry degeneracy).
E = Sdyn + ln 2 · K minimises the description complexity of the law and the configuration data — not of the behaviour that follows from it. Simple rules with rich emergent behaviour are not an anomaly but the norm (three-body problem, cellular automata, Navier–Stokes), and for EEML even a requirement: the convergence conjecture 11.7 demands that low-K laws admit universal computation — i.e. can carry complex behaviour. "Simple law, complex world" is thereby a prediction of the framework, not a tension within it.
Status: both arguments motivated; the dynamics of differentiation (how structure actually emanates from the zero-point) remains open problem 11.2.
The question. Why does a quantum branch weigh as |ψ|², and not |ψ| or |ψ|⁴? This is a famous open foundation (Everett, Gleason, Zurek, Deutsch-Wallace, Sebens-Carroll each have a route). EEML's three-layer is already structurally many-branched-with-a-measure; the question is whether its own axioms fix the measure over branches.
Step 1 [derived]: composition forces a power law. For independent subsystems amplitudes multiply (ctotal = c₁·c₂), and axiom A2 demands that weights of independent events multiply. So f(|c₁||c₂|) = f(|c₁|)·f(|c₂|) on (0,1]: the multiplicative Cauchy equation. With the codomain [0,1] and a logarithmic substitution this is exactly the situation of the A3 sharpening: an additive function bounded above is linear (Ostrowski), hence f(x) = x^α: a branch's weight is necessarily a power of its amplitude. No continuity needed; same theorem, third application (after e⁻ˢ and the complex numbers).
Step 2 [derived, conditional]: branching consistency forces α = 2. If a branch splits symmetrically into two equal sub-branches (c → c/√2, c/√2), weight conservation demands 2·(|c|/√2)^α = |c|^α, which holds only for α = 2. More generally: Σ|ci|^α is invariant under the unitary dynamics only for α = 2: any other power lets total probability mass drift in time or depend on how finely branches are sliced. Weight conservation under refinement plus A2 thus gives Born: P = |ψ|².
Honest conditions, named: (i) that the weight depends only on |amplitude| rests on decoherence/envariance (phases of decohered branches are inaccessible in principle; Zurek); (ii) the preferred-basis question is answered by decoherence, not by us; (iii) weight conservation under branching seemed a genuine assumption, but was dissolved the same evening: see below. Within those conditions the Born rule is not a postulate but the third output of the same two axioms: one weighing engine, three laws: a-local over the members, local per branch and per step. Relation to the literature: the ingredients are known (Everett's additivity, Gleason's uniqueness, Zurek's envariance); the contribution here is the unification: that exactly the EEML axioms which fixed the existence measure also fix the branch measure.
Addendum (same evening): the no-drift assumption dissolved. What still stood as an assumption turns out to decompose into three things the framework already carried. First, the timeless ontology: weights live on complete histories, not on moments; every branch cross-section at every time partitions the same set of histories, so there is no level at which total probability mass could drift: "drift" is time-talk applied to the timeless layer, the same category error as at the zero point (11.2). Second, the additivity of the measure over disjoint alternatives: already at axiom level. Third, decoherence, which was already condition (i): decohered branches are orthogonal and their amplitudes then add Pythagoreanly, |c|² = Σ|ci|², without interference terms. And this makes step 2 more elegant than via dynamics: additivity demands P(branch) = Σ P(sub-branches), the power law gives P = |c|^α, and Pythagoras tolerates that only for α = 2. The power two is thus not a dynamical fact but the unique point where the additivity of the measure and the geometry of orthogonal branches coincide. What honestly remains: decoherence is approximate (interference is never exactly zero), so Born is exact in the decohered limit; and the Pythagorean structure comes from the inner product of quantum kinematics itself, which we use but do not derive: no circularity with the probability rule, but a dependence on the kinematics, named as such.
Formal proof of Tt ⊥ Th ⊥ Tr under a defined metric on 𝒞. Candidate: DeWitt metric on superspace.
Status update (half solved): for the Euclidean formulation, Ebin's slice theorem (Ebin 1970) rigorously gives the orthogonal splitting gauge orbit ⊥ physical directions (Tr ⊥ rest) w.r.t. the L²/DeWitt metric. What remains open is only the Tt vs Th splitting within the physical slice — and under Reduction 10.6 that is the only place where the orthogonality still has to carry anything.
Status update (August 2026): dissolved. The question contains a layer error from the old flow picture. Between members there is no process from nothing to something (existence is not exclusive; "first nothing, then something" is time-talk outside its domain). Within a member, what feels like emanation is the arrow of time: every history compresses towards its simplest slice, and looking back is looking towards that nearly empty cross-section. The primal image "nothing does not exist, therefore it must be a point of everything" thus receives its formal counterpart: the zero point is not an origin event but the compressible side of every history. See working document kernwerk-12aug, item 5.
Formal dynamics of W=0 → W > 0. Candidate framework: stochastic quantisation with W as inverse diffusion coefficient.
Exact numerical values of αK, αI needed for quantitative predictions (α, mass ratios).
Sharpening (via Theorem 10.2): the det−1/2 weighting rewards flat directions (small eigenvalues → larger weight), while Ift penalises flatness. A toy comparison — assuming a flat direction of scale λ appears comparably in both Hessians (see Warning 7.2) — gives a per-mode weight ∝ λαI/ℏ − 1/2: flatness is penalised ⟺ αI > ℏ/2. In the strict limit ℏ → 0 the fine-tuning penalty always wins; at finite ℏ the crossover sits at αI* = ℏ/2. The α question is thereby a concrete quantitative question, not a free choice.
Status update (largely solved via Reduction 10.6): αI is eliminated (Itach → membership of 𝔄; Ift → bit cost within K), and αK = ln 2 is fixed by the universal prior. The crossover above was an artefact of double-counting: as bit cost the fine-tuning penalty wins robustly (mode weight ∝ λ+1/2), at every ℏ. Open remainder: the MDL choice itself (motivated, Def. 6.1) and the factorisation e−Sdyn/ℏ · 2−K.
Explicit heat-kernel coefficient a6 on Fermat quartic K3 via Laplacian eigenvalue spectrum. Order-of-magnitude target: ζ'K3(0) ~ 103–104.
Honest sharpening (the metric obstacle): no closed form of the Ricci-flat metric on K3 is known — Yau (1978) proves it exists, but the proof is non-constructive. Computing the Laplacian spectrum analytically is therefore impossible with existing technology. The viable route is numerical spectral geometry: Donaldson's balanced-metric algorithm (Donaldson 2009), the numerical Ricci-flat K3 metrics of Headrick–Wiseman (2005), and recent machine-learned Calabi-Yau metrics. This does not degrade 11.4 — it makes it concrete: not a pen-and-paper sum but a numerical project with known methodology, delivering ζ'K3(0) with controlled numerical error. Moreover, after Reduction 10.6 there are no free weighting parameters left, so the chain geometry → number contains no ad-hoc dials.
Status update (July 2026): solved. The numerical project has been carried out. Outcomes (Vol = 1, validated via exact volume, Gauss-Bonnet/c₂ = 24, ζ(0) = −11/15 and multiple seeds): ζ'K3(0) = +1.0 ± 0.1 and a₆ = −0.71 ± 0.02, via local curvature integrals with a Bianchi reduction avoiding third derivatives. The old target window ~10³–10⁴ is thereby definitively refuted; see physics page 6.1 and criterion F2′ for the consequences.
Under what conditions do V and Seff share the same critical structure, so that physical stability (D²V ⪰ 0, Definition 7.1) and being an attractor of the selection dynamics (D²Seff ≻ 0) coincide? See Warning 7.2. Separate sub-question: the boundary λmin = 0 (moduli / flat directions) is non-hyperbolic — linearisation is inconclusive there and centre-manifold analysis is required.
Status update (dissolved via Reduction 10.6): the two Hessians need not coincide, because they do different jobs — D²V decides existence (membership of 𝔄), D²Seff decides weights (det′ prefactor in μ). Selection runs through the measure, not through a flow, so the attractor property is only needed in the optional relaxation picture. Remaining question (open, downgraded): physically stable saddles of Seff in 𝔄 and their treatment beyond the Laplace expansion; plus the boundary λ → 0.
Is μ (Addendum 10.3) normalisable over all of 𝔄, i.e. Σk e−Seff(Ck)/ℏ det′−1/2 < ∞? For an infinite landscape this is a genuine assumption. Sub-questions: volume factors ∫𝓜 dvol under continuous degeneracy (moduli spaces), and the treatment of zero modes in det′ — both linked to 11.5.
Status update (largely solved via Theorem 10.7): the discrete part converges via the Kraft inequality — hard, given prefix-free MDL, the sector lower bound on Sdyn and a bounded prefactor. The continuous part is conditional on finite Weil–Petersson volumes (Douglas & Lu 2005). Open remainder: the boundary λ → 0 in det′.
Status update (August 2026): upgraded. Beside the existing half theorem (self-representation ⟹ compressibility) there is now a conditional theorem in the other direction: every member passing the observer gates possesses, through its chemistry, a substrate for universal computation, in which an encoding of the law fits at configuration cost of order K(law); self-representation is thus available and not suppressed by the measure. The open core has shrunk: whether observers typically use the available self-representation. Einstein's riddle now hangs on that alone. See kernwerk-12aug, item 3.
The reading rule (10.8) conditions μ on self-representing universes. The half theorem (self-representation ⟹ low K) is hard; open is the converse direction: does low K generically imply self-representability (do simple laws admit universal computation)? If so, "μ-heavy" and "understands itself" converge and the conditioning is almost free — the sharp form of "the actual universe understands itself".
Minimising E[C] over configurations C gives preference to (not: explains as the only possible — see reading key):
Ricci-flatness (Sdyn-min) → Calabi-Yau (Yau 1978)
Spin + simply-connected → K3 via Rokhlin (§physics)
Modular invariance → η(τ)24 unique → χ = 24
K-minimisation + observer and data conditions
→ SM + νR (unique; Aug 2026)
Correction (August 2026): this table used to say "K-minimum + I-penalty → Ngen = 3". That was too strong and has been refuted by the framework's own computations: bare K-minimisation prefers one generation; the measured number 3 is address, with a quantified price of 10 bits (testing page, address ledger). What did prove derivable is stronger than the old claim:
Measure. Over the Wedderburn-classified finite spectral triples the description cost is frozen as KF = KA + Kdiag with prefix-free (Elias-gamma-style) coding; it adds under composition and thus qualifies under axiom A4, weighted at ln 2 per bit per Reduction 10.6.
Theorem S′ (first-order obstruction). In every Krajewski diagram where the leptons occur exclusively as a colour component of one fundamental irrep of a simple factor (SU(4) or SU(5) embedding), every admissible Dirac component acts as the identity on the shared index, and quark-lepton Yukawa equality at the breaking scale is forced. Basis of proof: the exact condition [[D,a],b°] = 0 admits only module maps per component; verified numerically-exactly by rank computation.
Result. Under observer conditions (an electron must be able to exist) and the measurements (neutrino mass; bottom ≠ tau, which via S′ eliminates all embedding classes), the standard model with right-handed neutrinos is the unique KF-minimal survivor within the declared universe, robust up to matrix size n = 5 and against four building blocks. The hypercharges follow from the anomaly conditions themselves. Full chain, criteria and scripts: testing page, section 2.
The split carries over. Mathematics too has multiple consistent rulebooks (the set-theoretic multiverse), and the same law/address division works there: whatever every arithmetic-carrying system enforces is law; the famous independent statements (the continuum hypothesis, the value of 2ℵ₀, V=L) are address: the α's of mathematics. A century of "but is CH true?" receives the same answer as "why is α 1/137": a category error of the address type, now with a framework explaining why those questions had to prove undecidable.
The history of the axiom of choice as a matching retrodiction. Choice (AC) and determinacy (AD) cost exactly the same under the measure (each: the base rules plus one axiom), so the practice likelihood decided: AC won globally (it compresses nearly all of mathematics), AD won locally in the one subfield it cleans up, and the field eventually bought both compressions at once via the large-cardinal tower (which proves AD holds in its own wing L(ℝ)). That is exactly the Bayesian pattern of the scale, and it is how history actually went.
And the likelihood has now been measured for the first time. Over a formalised corpus of 439,764 theorems (Lean/mathlib; sample 2000, seed 137, fully reproducible): 90.5% depends on propositional extensionality, 83.7% on quotients, 70.2% on the axiom of choice [68.2-72.3]; the purely constructive core is 7.4%. The refinement resolving Diaconescu's conflation (in Lean, choice also supplies classical logic): genuine witness extraction is at most 18.7% [14.3-23.1]; at least 53.0% needs only excluded middle. Giving up classical logic thus costs ~72% of the library; dropping genuine choice alone at most ~19%. Three historical outcomes (intuitionism lost outright, AC scepticism faded, constructive mathematics remained a real niche), three matching numbers: the first empirical price list of an axiom system.
The full method and all numbers (mathlib, Coq stdlib, mathcomp), including the cross-measurement that felled the tool-independence stake, now live on a dedicated page, usable independently of EEML: Axiom audit.
And registered forward. The same frozen rubric, calibrated on the V=L case (it rejects it, exactly as the field did), weighs the two live candidate extensions: today Martin's Maximum wins (fully constructed, forty years of yield) over Ultimate-L (superior decisiveness, but its existence hangs on unproven conjectures); the flip trigger is fixed (a proof of the iterability conjectures tips the verdict) and the actual expectation is synthesis: the field will eventually buy both again, as with AC and AD. Testable against the coming decades of set theory.
